Reshaping the agricultural landscape
Circlefarming is an initiative of designer & inventor Floris Schoonderbeek and an agricultural technique in which a rotating arm - the Compass - is the carrier for people, existing tools and new technology. The combination of these three components makes embedded farming possible: embedded in the local landscape and embedded in local communities.
What is Circlefarming about?
-
Circlefarming makes it possible to grow a large diversity of food locally and on relatively small fields: local communities have easier access to a locally produced, more plant-based diet.
A new connection with our food is created through participation: not only by purchasing directly from a local farmer but also by working on the land. Circlefarming gives small communities the opportunity to be self-sufficient.
-
Circlefarming offers a new agricultural method for crop cultivation that facilitates and makes the transition to regenerative farming - a form of agriculture that restores the soil instead of robbing it - easier and more effective. It offers accessible, safe techniques that make small-scale crop cultivation more feasible and comfortable and the system with the Compass is extremely suitable for the increasingly wetter conditions in the Netherlands.
-
A new landscape design is created with space for animals, plants and people in the spaces between the circular crop cultivation. With more variation in flora, biodiversity is promoted, the health of the soil increases and nature and the agricultural landscape merge again. Green corridors are also created as a connection between nature reserves. In short: a beautiful green landscape, with more biodiversity, a healthier soil and more nature.
-
A local community can participate in farming and is the most important sales market for the harvest: both local catering and shops as well as consumers of a Circle Farm shop. We also believe that the distance between consumers and food production should be reduced. People need to know what they eat and where it comes from. This can be done by participating in a Circlefarm but also by educating children in school or community gardens.
